I’ll be honest, I had many reservations about ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ While the movie wasn’t perfect, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot saved the day for me.
There’s no doubt about it — Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a movie that’s epic in scale. Ben Affleck takes over the role of the Caped Crusader, and he does the role justice. The movie definitely has its flaws, including too much CGI and running long, but the movie is the perfect set up for future films in the DC universe.
First thing’s first, let’s talk about Ben. When he was first cast as Batman, I was furious. Christian Bale was so compelling as the Dark Knight in the three previous Batman films, how could anyone match him? Well, I was wrong. Ben stepped into the role with ease, and the bat suit fits him well. He’s the perfect Bruce Wayne — charismatic, cocky and haunted by his past.
The major storyline in Batman v Superman revolves around the building tension between Batman and Superman. Batman believes Superman to be a threat, while Superman tries to convince everyone that he’s not. The entire movie pins man versus god against each other, and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) feeds off that tension.
All of that build-up culminates into one epic battle scene. While the movie is titled Batman v Superman, the climax is anything but. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) have to team up to fight Doomsday, a monster created by Lex.
Speaking of Wonder Woman, she really makes quite the entrance. She’s a total badass. She’s fierce, confident, and brings a strong female energy that the movie really needed. I just wish there was more of her in the movie.
Henry Cavill is fine as Superman, but he’s just not given enough to do. It’s really disappointing considering they had a plethora of plot to focus on with this living god. The movie really focuses on introducing the new Batman into the fold. However, the final 10 minutes of the movie are shocking for any and all Superman fans. It sets up the upcoming films and a big future moment for the Man of Steel.
The biggest letdown for me was Jesse’s Lex Luthor. It’s like he was auditioning for the role of The Joker. His performance as the self-centered billionaire was totally over-the-top. I had high hopes for him, but he needed to take things down a notch. The movie was also muddled with many subplots and the use of way too much CGI.
Despite the movie’s flaws, there wasn’t one moment in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice where I wasn’t entertained. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn’t meant to be a stand-alone movie. It’s just the first of many DC movies to come, including the highly-anticipated Justice League movie. For those who are fans of The Flash and Aquaman, you’re in for quite a surprise.
Give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a chance. It’s full of non-stop action and adventure, and I have to give credit where credit is due. So three cheers for Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman! Watching these three superheroes on the big screen together is definitely an epic sight to behold.
